{Flower Advice}:3 Tips to Avoid Outdoor Wedding Flower Disasters

Outdoor weddings can be very romantic, beautiful and in Southern Utah they are often surrounded by breathtaking scenery. As much as I love outdoor weddings – they always leave me with some extra things to wonder about …. About the weather, wind, rain, heat and et cetera.

I would like to share with you some of my tips when having outdoor weddings:

1. Here comes the sun:  Flowers are “afraid” of direct sun and heat. So,if you choose to have your wedding outside make sure that it’s either very early or later in the day and that there is shade to keep flowers from wilting. Avoid using Hydrangea or Oriental/Asiatic Lilies during the hot spring-summer months,as they wilt fast and Lilies’ petals became very fragile in the sun. Also, make sure that all your arrangements have plenty of water. If you do flowers yourself make sure to keep your centerpieces somewhere cool, and then place them on the tables right before the reception so all of the flowers will look fresh and nice

2. Blown by the wind:  If you have your wedding in a windy area it’s always good to use heavy containers or use some weights to keep your arrangements from flying away. All the flowers in the arrangements need to be secured – don’t do loose arrangements as they will fly away. If you choose to use Oriental/Stargazer or Asiatic Lilies in your bouquet, make sure that the flowers are not fully open or a strong wind will tear apart all the petals during the ceremony. If you are using an arch for the ceremony, make sure that it is very sturdy and secure to the ground. You definitely don’t want for it to fall down with all the beautiful floral décor on it.

3. Soak in the rain:  Check the weather forecast. It’s always good to have a back-up plan so that you can move your wedding inside if you need to.

A professional florist will always give you good advice and/or a heads up to help make sure that no floral disasters happen so that your wedding flowers look absolutely beautiful!
