{Flower Advice}:8 Tips on putting fresh flowers on the wedding cake

Fresh flowers are the most popular way to decorate the cake. Flowers are an integral part of your wedding day,and when placed on a cake, they can tie into the theme of the day. Flowers also provide a gourmet, customized element to any cake. Choosing fresh flowers is often less expensive than having sugar flowers since there is so much time put into the creation of the sugar flowers which equals labor cost and a higher cost to you.  When choosing fresh flowers for your cake, there are a few things to keep in mind.

3 tier wedding cake with pink flowers1. Don’t poison your guests:Although a lot of flowers can be edible, there are a few flowers that can cause poisoning as they contain toxic properties that could make you sick. Check with your florist if the flowers that you are going to use for the cake are safe.

2. Don’t use strangers:Make sure that the flowers are grown organically and without any pesticides or toxins. Don’t use flowers grown along the road or from an unfamiliar field.

3. If you decorate the cake yourself:Clean all the flowers in advance and keep them in a clean container with clean water. Place a towel on a counter next to the cake, put flowers on the towel and make sure that the stems are completely dry before you start arranging flowers on the cake.

4. Choosing flowers:You should to decide if you would like to use the same flowers as for your bouquet or for the wedding. Or if you just would like to use a similar color flowers. Some flowers will not work well for the cake due to the size, shape, sturdiness or toxicity.

5. Choose the style and composition:How would you like for the flowers to be arranged? Would you like to go with a clean and minimalist look and have just a one big flower (for example,Peonies) on a plain cake or would you like to have something more lavish? Flowers can be arranged between the tiers,on a top and sides of the cake or make them cascading from the top to the bottom. There are so many ways to make your cake more distinctive and stand out with the flowers. You cake designer and florist can certainly help you with placement and can work on getting the most blooms for your budget.

6. Something meaningful:What you also might consider when choosing your cake flowers is the meaning behind the flower. For example, red Roses means passionate love,Lisianthus – calming,Peonies – healing,Sunflowers – adoration …. Or may be you would like to choose the flowers that mean something special to you. What flowers did you receive on your first date with your fiancée? Or may be you would like to choose the same flowers that your Mom was having in her bouquet? Consider to use something that have a sentimental value to you or to both of you.

Some florist prefer don’t touch the cake and in this cake it will be a job of your cake designer to arrange the flowers on your cake. Some cake designers don’t want to work with the fresh flowers and in this case you need to talk to your florist.

8. You also need to consider the time when your cake designer will deliver the cake – depending on the design you choose for your cake flowers it might take from 10 up to an hour (or more) to place flowers on the cake. You want to make sure that everything will be done before your ceremony starts and that all flowers will look nice and fresh.

{Styled Shoot}:Red,White and Blue Summer Fun

I love a good challenge and sure enough Taylor from Taylor Made Weddings and Events and Darci from Elan Magazine know how to create a good challenge! These two Ladies are masterminds of creativity and outside-the-box thinking.

For me,the challenge was the combination of colors –red, white and blue –that needed to look summery, fresh and festive. The bridal bouquet needed to be red and green, centerpieces red and white and,for whatever reason,I associate these colors with Christmas … and to further strengthen the (unintended) Christmas theme, the main flowers were red and white –Carnations and Tulips. The only help I had –there were turquoise and blue accents.

Taylor came up with the amazingly fresh idea of having a suspended entryway and a dessert table canopy – something I have never seen used in weddings before. An interesting combination of different style, shape and texture vases for the centerpieces and buffet table created a great visual effect, and of course, asymmetrically arranged flowers brought it all together.

The photos from this shoot exceeded my expectations –above and beyond –and as a result, this shoot has been already featured in two highly respectful publications in Utah – Elan Woman Magazine and Utah Bride and Groom Magazine blog.

{Wedding Flowers}:8 Gorgeous Pink Bridal Bouquets

Everyone knows that pink is romantic and charming. Of course, pink can also convey playfulness and tenderness. Combining multiple shades of pink, light purple  and other pastels maintains the soft, delicate, playfulness of pink. Adding darker shades of pink, purple and burgundy increases the intensity.

Any shade of pink becomes more sophisticated when combined with black, grey or medium to darker shades of blue. Medium to dark green with pink is also an eye-catching combination.

Today I want to share some of the pink bridal bouquet that I created in the past.

{Our News}:Featured in the Elan Woman Magazine

What a great honor to be featured in the leading southwest magazine “Elan Woman”! I have tremendous respect for Darci Hansen –for her passion, vision, gigantic heart, wisdom, strikingly beautiful personality, honesty, attention to detail and her ability to be the best at what she does – ALWAYS!

When Taylor Proctor invited me to be a part of the summer shoot – I jumped at the chance! I know that working with Darci and Taylor is always going to be a great (and fun) challenge with a twist. It was definitely a challenge to do arrangements for this shoot using only red and white flowers (Independence Day theme),and create a uniquely fresh and new look.

I hope you’ll agree that the results went above and beyond! Having Amy and Natasha from Photo Love Stories shoot this summer festivity setting was unbeatable – these women know how to work with natural light!

{Flower Advice}:3 Tips to Avoid Outdoor Wedding Flower Disasters

Outdoor weddings can be very romantic, beautiful and in Southern Utah they are often surrounded by breathtaking scenery. As much as I love outdoor weddings – they always leave me with some extra things to wonder about …. About the weather, wind, rain, heat and et cetera.

I would like to share with you some of my tips when having outdoor weddings:

1. Here comes the sun:  Flowers are “afraid” of direct sun and heat. So,if you choose to have your wedding outside make sure that it’s either very early or later in the day and that there is shade to keep flowers from wilting. Avoid using Hydrangea or Oriental/Asiatic Lilies during the hot spring-summer months,as they wilt fast and Lilies’ petals became very fragile in the sun. Also, make sure that all your arrangements have plenty of water. If you do flowers yourself make sure to keep your centerpieces somewhere cool, and then place them on the tables right before the reception so all of the flowers will look fresh and nice

2. Blown by the wind:  If you have your wedding in a windy area it’s always good to use heavy containers or use some weights to keep your arrangements from flying away. All the flowers in the arrangements need to be secured – don’t do loose arrangements as they will fly away. If you choose to use Oriental/Stargazer or Asiatic Lilies in your bouquet, make sure that the flowers are not fully open or a strong wind will tear apart all the petals during the ceremony. If you are using an arch for the ceremony, make sure that it is very sturdy and secure to the ground. You definitely don’t want for it to fall down with all the beautiful floral décor on it.

3. Soak in the rain:  Check the weather forecast. It’s always good to have a back-up plan so that you can move your wedding inside if you need to.

A professional florist will always give you good advice and/or a heads up to help make sure that no floral disasters happen so that your wedding flowers look absolutely beautiful!

{Real Weddings}:Blue and black wedding by the pond

When the weather is willing to cooperate,it can be so much fun to have your wedding outside!  Tavanna &Moroni chose to have their wedding by the beautiful Lichfield ponds in Tocqueville,UT.  In case you haven’t had a chance to see it yet,let me tell you that it is a truly stunning location.  Nestled in the heart of Southern Utah, surrounded by red rocks and soaring mountains, this location has everything – pond, waterfall, gazebo and a dazzling view!

Tavanna’s colors were black, white and blue. She chose to have Hydrangea,Carnations,Lilies and Cornflowers for both the personal flowers and for the floral arrangements that were used for the reception.
